Visiting Portugal
Portugal is part of the Schengen Visa agreement which is valid for the following group of countries: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Malta. The Schengen Visa, issued by any Embassy or Consulate of the above mentioned countries, allows the holder to travel freely within the Schengen countries. However, entry can be refused if not all admission requirements are fulfilled upon entering the Schengen territory.
Please note that while requirements for a visa, work and/or residence permit for Portugal are the same wherever an application is made, the processing may vary from one country to another.
You should expect a processing time of at least 30 days. In some cases the waiting period could be considerably longer.
•  Types of short-stay entry visas
- Airport transit visas
This visa entitles a foreign citizen to pass through the international transit area of airports without actually entering the national territory of the country concerned, during a stop-over or transfer between two stages of an international flight.
- Transit visas
This visa entitles a foreign citizen who is travelling from one Third State to another Third State to pass through a Schengen territory.
- Short-term or travel visas
This visa entitles a foreign citizen who seeks to enter the Schengen territories, for reasons other than immigration, to pay a continuous visit or several visits, the duration of which does not exceed three months in any half-year from the date of first entry. As a general rule, this visa may be issued for one or several entries.
- Short-stay or travel visas: multiple entry visas
In the case of a foreign citizen who needs to travel frequently to one or several Schengen States, for example on business, short-stay visas may be issued for several visits, provided that the total length of these visits does not exceed three months in any half-year. This multiple entry visa may be valid for one year, and in exceptional cases, for more than a year for certain categories of persons.
•  Long-stay visas
Visas for visits exceeding three months, whether for study, training, working or residence, shall be national visas issued by one of the Member States in accordance with its national legislation. These types of visas are only valid for the national territory of the concerned country.
Please contact the Consular Section to inquire about the specific requirements for these types of visas.
Requirements for applying for a Schengen visa:
•  In General:
Your Schengen visa must be entered into your passport before your arrival in Portugal .
All visitors to Portugal must have a valid passport and enough money for their stay in Portugal as well as a confirmed return airline-ticket. Please show your original passport when submitting your application. Please note that the Consular Section of the Embassy cannot process your application unless all supporting documents, including medical/travel insurance, are enclosed. Payment has to be made in advance of applying.
If you intend to visit only one particular Schengen country, you must apply at the Embassy or Consulate of that country. If you intend to visit several Schengen countries you must apply at the Embassy or Consulate of the country of your main destination. If you intend to visit several Schengen countries but do not have a main destination, you should apply for a visa at the Embassy or Consulate of the country of your first point of entry.
If you do not need a visa for the particular Schengen country of your main destination or first point of entry, please note that you may require a visa for other Schengen countries you wish to visit. You should then apply at the Embassy or Consulate of the first Schengen country you require a visa for.
Please apply in good time ahead of your planned departure in order to avoid disappointment.
